Department of Post Basic Mental Health Nursing
Welcome to the Department of Post Basic Mental Health Nursing at Soarstar College of Nursing Sciences. Our department is dedicated to preparing nurses with advanced knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive care for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Through a blend of theoretical instruction, practical training and clinical experiences, we equip our students to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by mental illness.
Our Program
Post Basic Diploma in Mental Health Nursing: This program is designed for registered nurses seeking specialised training in mental health nursing. It covers a wide range of topics, including psychiatric assessment, therapeutic interventions, psychopharmacology, crisis intervention and recovery-oriented care.
The duration of this specialty Nursing program is 18 months, 3 semesters program and is awaiting approval by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and is run by Soarstar College of Nursing Sciences. Furthermore, upon graduation students will be licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and work as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in Nigeria
Curriculum

Hands-on Learning
Hands-on learning experiences are an integral part of our mental health nursing program. Students participate in clinical rotations in psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centres and other mental health settings, where they gain practical experience under the guidance of experienced mental health nurses and healthcare professionals.
Simulation Training
Our simulation lab provides students with opportunities to practice essential mental health nursing skills in a controlled environment. Simulation scenarios are designed to replicate real-life situations encountered in mental health practice, allowing students to develop clinical competencies and enhance their critical thinking and decision-making abilities.
